Alternative Judgments: Critical Engagements with Legal Doctrine

18 October 2016

Time: 6:30 - 8:00pm
Venue: Room 1.1, Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, 67-69 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3JB

This event is hosted by Dr Sheelagh McGuinness (Bristol) and Dr Ruth Fletcher (QMUL).

Alternative judgments projects blend critical research techniques with doctrinal practice in developing judgment-writing as a novel legal method. Feminist Judgments projects have led the way in developing this methodology, while new applications include Ethical Judgments.

Fletcher and McGuinness will share some of the lessons learned from alternative judgments projects and consider possibilities for future development. Possible topics for discussion include: playing with legal language, crafting evidence-based arguments, and developing ethico-legal reasoning.

Alternative Judgments is the first in a new series of Conversations in Health Law. This series will provide a space for critical conversation to consider topics, methods and concepts in health law, broadly defined. Conversations aim to connect with the teaching and research interests of students and staff by focusing on insights from new research projects, experiences from practice, and opportunities for re-imagining health law. Conversation will usually be led by two short presentations with plenty of time for questions and comments.
