CEILA Annual Lecture with Professor José E. Alvarez

The Annual Lecture for the Centre for European and International Legal Affairs (CEILA) will be delivered by Professor José E. Alvarez. The title of the lecture is “The Use (and Misuse) of European Human Rights Law in Investor-State Arbitration”.

  • Discussant: Professor Zachary Douglas QC (Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies & Matrix Chambers).

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception for attendees.

Speaker Biography

Professor José E. Alvarez is the Herbert and Rose Rubin Professor of International Law at New York University Law School. He has served as president of the American Society of International Law (2006–2008) and is current co-editor in chief of the American Journal of International Law. His lectures on the public international law regime governing international investment, at the Hague Academy of International Law, were published as a monograph in 2011 by Martinus Nijhoff. His other books are The Impact of International Organizations on International Law (Brill 2017); The Evolving International Investment Regime (Oxford University Press, 2011) and International Organizations as Law-Makers (Oxford University Press, 2005). He has published more than 100 articles and book chapters.
