CCLS LLM students are invited to attend a lecture by Luca Castellani, UNCITRAL Secretariat, on "The UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (Vienna, 1980): Basic features and practical importance". In addition, the talk will more generally discuss harmonisation and UNCITRAL's role in international commercial law.
Luca Castellani is the secretary of UNCITRAL Working Group IV (Electronic Commerce).
After graduating in law in the University of Torino, he received a doctoral degree in comparative law from the University of Trieste and a master in international law from New York University. He was admitted to the bar in Italy and held research and lecturing positions in Italy (Università del Piemonte Orientale) and Eritrea (University of Asmara). He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Queensland TC Beirne School of Law.
He joined the Office of Legal Affairs of the secretariat of the United Nations in New York in 2001, working at its Treaty Section, and moved to its International Trade Law Division (discharging the functions of UNCITRAL secretariat), based in Vienna, Austria, in 2004. From March 2012 to November 2013 he was assigned as first Head of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (UNCITRAL RCAP), located in Incheon, Republic of Korea. In the UNCITRAL secretariat, he deals in particular with the promotion of the adoption and uniform interpretation of UNCITRAL texts relating to sale of goods and electronic commerce.
He also served as legal advisor to the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2008 and as Programme Officer, Corruption and Economic Crime Branch (CEB), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 2010, dealing with issues relating to the use of electronic means in the prevention of corruption.
He published in the fields of international trade law and comparative law, dealing, in particular, with sale of goods, electronic commerce and trade law reform in developing countries. He is member of the United Nations Network of Experts for Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific (UN NExT) Legal Advisory Group.
