Each year, the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London organises a series of guest lectures given by leading International and EU Taxation experts. These inspirational speakers provide an insight into the latest developments in tax law with particular emphasis on what is happening in practice. Through the guest lectures, the audience may be inspired and motivated to think outside the box. Breaking with old tradition, our ultimate goal is to create an environment for an interactive, stimulating, exciting and educational conversation or even a debate between the lecturers and the attendees.

Heather Self, Tax Partner, Pinsent Masons, will explore some key Treaty issues for Developing Countries seeking to attract Foreign Direct Investment. Professor Dr Hans van den Hurk, Maastricht University and Tax Partner, Deloitte, The Netherlands, will provide an insight into the meaning of responsible tax in this rapidly developing area of international tax law.

Professor van den Hurk has a special focus on European tax law. Because EU Law is applicable in all Member States in exactly the same way, he initiated a group of international tax specialists in all Member States in order to develop ideas and products which help optimizing international tax planning. Since 1991 Hans has authored several articles and books, including Europees Gemeenschapsrecht en directe belastingen (this book deals with EU-law and Direct Taxes) and Belgisch belastingrecht (Belgium tax law). Hans is correspondent for the Bulletin of International Fiscal Documentation (published by IBFD) and he contributes regularly to this publication. Since August 2005 Hans has also been working as professor in European Corporate Income Taxes at the University of Maastricht. Hans lectures on Comparative International Tax Law, International Tax Law and Dutch Corporate Income Taxes. Part of these courses are run for the Maastricht International Tax master which attracts students from all over Europe, Asia and North and South America. Hans also lectures regularly at other universities in the Netherlands, Gent (Belgium) and many others including Taipei. In 2010 and 2013 Hans has trained in Taipei employees of the Taiwan ministry of Finance who work on modernising their corporate income taxes in order to improve the position of Taiwan as an investors country.
