This workshop is organised by Queen Mary Reflection Group on Terrorism and Human Rights, part of the QMUL Criminal Justice Centre.
In this workshop we want to examine the relationship of surveillance by intelligence services in the context of counter-terrorism activities with human rights obligations in respect of the right to protection of the right to privacy of personal data. We will also examine the changing nature of the job of the intelligence services bearing in mind the increasing importance of data collection, management and interpretation in those activities. In this context we will inquire into the nature of oversight bodies and their powers to regulate and ensure the compatibility of intelligence service activities with EU fundamental rights and ECHR human rights.
