Start of European Banking Union: Perspectives and Challenges

10 November 2014

Time: 9:00am - 4:45pm
Venue: R405, Lionel Robbins Building, London School of Economics

Professors Harald Benink (Tilburg University), Charles Goodhart (FMG, LSE) and Rosa Lastra (CCLS, QMUL) have organised a conference on European Banking Union to explore the opportunities and challenges of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), the Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM) and the other pillars of this new milestone in the process of European integration.

On 4 November 2014 the European Central Bank became the direct supervisor for 120 significant banking groups in participating Member States, representing 82% (by assets) of the euro area banking sector. While the SSM deals with supervision, the SRM addresses the problems of cross border resolution and crisis management in Europe. The speakers will discuss the complex design of the SRM and its reliance on a legislative instrument which is applicable to the Single Market at large, the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive. A keynote speech by Ignazio Angeloni – member of the SSM Supervisory Board – is one of the highlights of the day.
