On 1 December 2014 the five-year transitional period - foreseen by Protocol 36 of the Lisbon Treaty for all
acts of the Union in the field of police cooperation and judicial co-operation in criminal matters adopted
before 1 December 2009 - will come to an end. This will entail a decisive move towards supranational
criminal justice in the European Union by strengthening the role of EU institutions including the
Commission and the Court of Justice. The United Kingdom has opted out from this body of legislation, but
is currently negotiating with the European institutions to opt back into a number of these measures from
1 December. 

This seminar will address the implications of these developments for both the place of the United Kingdom
in Europe’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, but also for the coherence and future direction of
European criminal law.
