New Joint Appointment between School of Law and Economics Department

Dr.Kern Alexander (Doctor of Philosophy in Law, (IALS), Juris Doctorat (Michigan)
MSc (Cantab) MA (Oxon) BSc Arts (Cornell)) has been appointed Reader by the School of Law and Economics Department and will be the course leader of the new Law and Finance Programme, which will commence with the MSC in Banking and Financial Services in September 08. Dr. Alexander joins Queen Mary from University of Cambridge, where he is currently Senior Research Fellow at the Cambridge Judge Business School.
Dr. Alexander's research interests include legal and economic theories of financial regulation, corporate governance of financial institutions; UK and European Community banking and securities regulation; the history of financial globalisation and the development of regulatory institutions; and economic/financial sanctions regulation and policy. He is also co-investigator (with Professor Amrita Dhillon of the Department of Economics, University of Warwick) on a major ESRC research project in international economic law and sovereign debt finance that is part of the ESRC World Economy and Finance programme. Dr Alexander has worked as an adviser to HM Treasury and to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on financial regulation and economic sanctions policy. In July 2006 he gave oral and written evidence to the House of Lords Select Committee on Economic Affairs on the "The Impact of Economic Sanctions", and in November 2006 gave oral and written evidence to the European Union Parliament's Special Committee on 'the Crisis at the Equitable Life Assurance Society'. In 2007, he co-authored a commissioned report for the EU Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee entitled, 'Financial Supervision and Crisis Management in the EU'. He advises central banks and national banking and securities regulators in developed and developing countries on technical assistance programmes related to prudential regulation of banking and securities markets.
