Dr Jill MarshallOn 27 May 2010, Dr Jill Marshall provided an expert opinion to the Council of Europe Committee for Equal Opportunities between women and men.
The Equal Opportunities Committee is drafting its own opinion on a report recently published by the Culture Committee of the Council of Europe on Islam, Islamism and Islamophobia. This opinion will use the material provided by Dr Marshall, and that of two other experts who attended the meeting, to focus on the impact on women of any recommendations by the Culture committee's report. Particular reference was made to practices that could be seen to be harmful and/or controversial, such as the wearing of the burqa in Europe. Dr Marshall's presentation highlighted the debates concerning the purpose of law in regulating practices offensive to some but seemingly freely chosen by others.
