Lord Phillips launches judicial independence project

The President of the UK Supreme Court, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, gave a lecture on 8 February to launch a three year AHRC-funded research project on ‘The Politics of Judicial Independence in Britain’s Changing Constitution’ which is being undertaken jointly by the School of Law at Queen Mary, the Constitution Unit at University College London and the School of Law at the University of Birmingham.

His lecture, entitled ‘Judicial Independence & Accountability: A View from the Supreme Court’ raised concerns about the way in which the Supreme Court is funded. Lord Phillips argued that: ‘Our present funding arrangements do not satisfactorily guarantee our institutional independence. We are, in reality, dependant each year upon what we can persuade the Ministry of Justice of England and Wales to give us by way of “contribution”. This is not a satisfactory situation for the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.’
