Professor Eric Heinze 'Is there a Straight Line from Speaking to Murdering?'

Professor Heinze has been interviewed by Danish daily newspaper The Berlingske on the recent mass murder in Norway. He challenged the idea that stricter hate speech laws can prevent a repetition of such incidents and argues that the killer was subject to many influences. Professor Heinze states that any attempt to trace the killings specifically to hate speech, as opposed to broader media representations of aggression, is futile and that in the internet age stricter hate speech laws may serve purely symbolic purposes, but cannot reduce dangers that are simply inherent to democratic societies.
