Professor Julian Lew QC gave the LLM in Paris opening lecture on “Regulation and Control of International Transactions”

Professor Julian Lew QC, Head of the School of International Arbitration, gave the opening lecture for the LLM in Paris programme on 2 September 2013. Professor Lew's lecture informative and thought-provoking lecture “Regulation and Control of International Transactions” was enjoyed by new and returning students on the programme. Students also had the opportunity to talk to several eminent legal figures who attended  the event,  including renowned arbitrators Yves Derains, Partner, Derains & Gharavi, Paris and Chairman of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, Andrea Carlevaris, Secretary General, ICC International Court of Arbitration (Paris), Jacques Buhart, Managing Partner of the McDermott Will & Emery LLP, Jacob Grierson, Partner, McDermott Will & Emery LLP, Paris/London, Michael Young, Partner, Co-Head of Arbitration, Allen & Overy LLP, Paris, along with leading practitioners including Georges Affaki, Member of the Executive Committee and Global Coordinator for Corporate Banking, BNP Paribas, Alexander de Daranyi, Director, Head of Finance Law, Sanofi and Hervé  Delannoy, President of the  AFJE - Association Francaise des Juristes d' Entreprise.

Dr Maxi Scherer, the LLM in Paris programme director welcomed the guests. She said: “We are delighted that the Queen Mary Paris LLM has become such a successful programme within a short period of time. We have seen a steady raise in the number of applications – over 120 for the current intake – and have received some important external recognition in form of the very prestigious academic prize of the Franco-British Lawyers' Society 2013.”
