Dr Prakash Shah, Reader in Culture and Law at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), took part in an event on 23 January 2016 to debate the background and consequences of the clause on caste discrimination in the Equality Act 2010. Dr Shah spoke against the need for the clause and criticised the way in which it had been justified and passed despite prior assurances that caste would not feature in the legislation and over the objections of Hindu organisations. He also discussed the potential consequences of having caste in anti-discrimination legislation. Dr Shah’s opponent was Satpal Muman of CasteWatch UK and the Chair was taken by Ms Anuja Prashar. The event was organised at the New Walk Museum by Vichar Manthan a platform run by volunteers to provide reflection on Hindu ideas. A video of Dr Shah’s main contribution can be found here.
