The Rt Hon Sir Lawrence Collins, LLD, FBA (Lord Justice Lawrence Collins), formerly a partner of the law firm Herbert Smith, from 1971 to 2000, specialising in international law, was one of the first two solicitors to be appointed Queen's Counsel (1997), the first solicitor to be directly appointed from practice as a Judge of the High Court (2000), and the first solicitor to be appointed to the Court of Appeal (2007). He studied at Downing College, Cambridge, graduating with a starred first in Law and received an LLM. from Columbia Law School in New York. He is also a Fellow of Wolfson College and an honorary fellow of Downing College (both at Cambridge). He has been the general editor of Dicey & Morris on the Conflict of Laws since its 11th edition in 1987, now in its 14th edition, 2006, as Dicey, Morris and Collins, the standard reference work in its field, and is the author of many books and articles on private international law. He was elected a member of the Institut de droit international in 1989 and Fellow of the British Academy in 1994. He has been a visiting professor at Queen Mary since 1982.
