What are the application procedures?

In order to apply, you must complete the online application and supply the following documentation:

  1. A transcript of your law degree marks, (if this is not in English, we will require a certified translation – electronic copies should be uploaded during the application process and you will be asked to show the originals during enrolment).
  2. Any other supporting qualifications.
  3. One reference letter.
  4. Proof of English language proficiency
  5. CV.

As we do not interview prospective students, these documents will form the basis of any decision made. Once an offer of study is made, you will be required to choose whether you wish to study the LLM in International Business Law or one of the three specialist LLMs. All individual course choices will be finalised after an offer of study is made.

When can I apply?

We recommend that you apply as soon as possible to ensure a place on the programme.

How long will it take for a decision to be made on my application?

Decisions on applications will be made as quickly as possible, but can take up to four weeks. Numbers are limited so we advise applying as soon as possible in case the programme becomes full.

Is there an application fee?

No, Queen Mary does not charge an application fee.

I wish to check on the progress of my application. Who do I contact?

The Queen Mary admissions team by email on cclsparis@qmul.ac.uk or the programme administrator by email: llm-paris@qmul.ac.uk.

Is my qualification recognised?

View the list of admissions information by country / region on our International Students web pages. Alternatively we use UKNARIC to check the equivalency of International and European qualifications.

What do you require in the reference - what must be included?

Please ensure that references are on headed paper. They should state your full name and date of birth, and indicate that you are applying for the LLM Paris. Reference forms are not used and we will not contact your referee(s) directly for a reference.

Academic reference (preferred.) This should contain:

  1. Verification of the fact that the academic referee has known you, the student, for a certain length of time. They must also give your full name and not an abbreviated or nickname. Also indicate the name of the course for which you are applying.
  2. Confirmation that you have attended a specific course.
  3. Class or mark of your degree or expected class of degree. (If expected please ensure it is made clear that this is an opinion and not a fact).
  4. Comment on your skills and abilities.

Professional reference - If you have extensive legal experience, a professional reference can be submitted. This could include:

  1. Verification of how long you were employed.
  2. Confirmation that you were working in a legal capacity and some detail of the type of work involved.
  3. Comment on your skills and abilities.

If permitted by your referee, references should be scanned and uploaded as part of the online application process. The LLM in Paris Administrator will need to see the original document either before or during enrolment – they will advise you of the procedure for this in your joining instructions.

However, if your referee provides a sealed reference and requires it to remain sealed, you can post it direct to the Programme Administrator to be matched up with your application. Since the online application requires at least one reference to be uploaded you can upload a word document stating that your reference(s) will follow in the post. This will allow you to complete the application.Your application will not be considered until at least one reference has arrived.

I am still waiting to get my reference letter. Can I submit my reference after my online application? Where do I send it?

Yes, you can submit your letter after your online application. However, your application will not be considered until at least one reference has been received.
Reference letters can be sent it directly to LLM in Paris Programme Administrator, CCLS, Queen Mary University of London, 67-69 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3JB.

What do I have to do if my degree transcript is not in English?

You must have any degree transcript that is not in English translated before submission.

Translations must come from one of the following:

  • Officially certified translator.
  • Solicitor.
  • British Council or Embassy
  • Registry of the university where you studied the course (for example, if translating transcripts).

Translations must be officially signed and stamped accordingly. We will require a copy of the foreign transcript document and the English translated copy. You will still have to provide the originals of any transcripts, certificates etc. on the enrolment day in January or September.

What if I have not finished my first degree or obtained a language test result?

You should still apply and provide a transcript of degree marks achieved so far. You will then be made a conditional offer showing our requirements from your country or university.

We strongly recommend that you consult your local English language test provider in good time to ensure that you will be able to provide us with a certificate to prove that you meet the English language requirements well in advance of the programme start date. Should you receive an offer it cannot be made unconditional without proof of your meeting the English language requirements.

What are the English language requirements for the LLM programme?

All students from countries where English is not the first language must supply a TOEFL, IELTS, ILEC or PTE Academic English language test result, which is no more than two years old. If you have not yet taken such a test at the application stage, you should still apply as you could be made a conditional offer, subject to our normal academic requirements.  You should still provide a language score in good time, since an offer cannot be made unconditional without proof of your meeting the English language requirements. View our English language requirements.

For those in Paris, the British Council, which is in the same building as the LLM programme at 9-11 rue de Constantine, 75007, offers English classes and is a recognised IELTS test centre. Visit the British Council website for information about exam dates and requirements.

What if I do not meet the conditions contained in my offer?

If you do not meet the academic conditions, you should still provide a transcript showing your final marks.  We will still consider this and in borderline cases, take into consideration other relevant qualifications and relevant work experience. If you do not meet the full language condition, you should still submit your obtained score as soon as possible.

Where do I submit my application, language scores and other required documents?

You should upload copies of these documents during the application process. Should you need to send documents after you have applied online:

Please submit all hard copies of this documentation to: Admissions Team C, Admissions Office, QMUL, Mile End Road, London, E1 4NS

All online copies can be sent to: cclsparis@qmul.ac.uk.

What happens after I submit my form?

All complete applications will be considered by Admissions Tutors. Provided you have included all the required documentation, we aim to inform you of a decision on your application within four weeks of receipt. All applicants are automatically emailed once their details are logged onto the system, informing them that we have received their application and giving them their application number and specific contact details of our staff.

Where will my lectures and seminars be held?

Lectures are held at the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP), 9-11 rue de Constantine, 75007, Paris.

Where will I live and what are the accommodation options?

For those not already living in Paris, there are a number of accommodation options in and around the city. We strongly advise you to start thinking about accommodation early on. The market for rented accommodation in Paris is very competitive, and you will need to be proactive and forward-thinking in finding a suitable place in which to live during your studies. Unfortunately, ULIP does not have accommodation of its own, but it can provide some advice to those wishing to find their own private accommodation.

What reading or preparation work is required before starting the programme?

We do not require any preparation or advance reading before starting your LLM.

Books and Class materials - How much and where to buy?

Each module will have its own recommendations or requirements for books and class materials. Many class materials are provided for reading or printing via our on-line learning environment. This will be explained during induction, with many materials, reading lists and other information being made available in good time.

How many hours of teaching will I have each week?

This will depend on which modules you choose and when they take place during the year. Modules are normally taught either during the daytime over five days, or in the evenings between 5.30pm-8.30pm. Teaching dates for modules are provided on the LLM in Paris Modules page.

Can I take the LLM on a part-time basis?

Yes, you can complete the programme part-time in two or three years.

What libraries will I use?

The library at ULIP has a small holding of the most prominent text books, as well as space in which to study, and printing and photocopying facilities. You will also be advised of access to other law libraries in Paris, as well as provided with access to electronic library resources of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. If/when in London you will  have access to the main Queen Mary library sites in London, at Mile End and, Lincoln's Inn Fields as well as the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) Library.

What digital law resources are provided?

All registered students at Queen Mary, University of London have easy access to a full range of electronic resources, including LexisNexis, Westlaw and a wide range of electronic journals. These may be accessed remotely by students on the LLM Paris.

What happens if I fail the examinations?

It is quite normal for students to have anxieties about failing examinations. Our experience, however, is that relatively few students fail a module. LLM students are highly motivated individuals and we only admit people who we believe can successfully complete the programme. If, however, you do fail to meet the required standards in the January / July examinations, you will be given a second opportunity to take the exams. More details for procedures on exam problems will be given to you in your student handbook.

What pastoral support is provided by Queen Mary, University of London?

The School of Law attaches great importance to the provision of support, both academic and pastoral, to its students. It recognises that there is a need for students, especially those who have come from abroad, to be able to discuss their individual course choices and progress during the academic year. The Queen Mary Advice and Counselling Service can support you with emotional and personal difficulties, and help with financial, legal and practical issues.

Equal Opportunities

Queen Mary welcomes students from all over the world. The College Charter states that our work shall be carried out in a spirit of tolerance, freedom of opinion, mutual concern and community service, and undertakes to avoid discrimination against any person on the grounds of religion, race, sex or politics. The College has a policy statement on Equal Opportunities in Employment, which we are actively implementing. Anti-harassment procedures have been agreed, aimed at eliminating incidents of racial or sexual harassment.

Applicants with disabilities

The College welcomes applications from students with special needs, and continues to invest money in improving facilities and accessibility. A Guide for Students with Disabilities is available from the Disability Co-ordinator and further information about our provision for students is available at: www.dds.qmul.ac.uk.

All applications are considered on academic merit but, in order that we can offer you appropriate advice about services and facilities, it is important that you provide information about your particular needs at the application stage. Please use the section on the application form to give details of any illness, disability or learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, as well as outlining the support you feel you will need to successfully complete your course of study. When an offer is made, the College's Disability Co-ordinator may contact you to discuss your needs in more detail.

If you would like to visit the College/ULIP before submitting an application, please contact llm-paris@qmul.ac.uk. There are many organisations who are happy to advise students preparing for Higher Education but a good place to start is SKILL: The National Bureau for Students with Disabilities, 336 Brixton Road, London SW9 7AA, Tel: +44 (0)20 7274 0565
