LLM Full Scholarships
Competition for scholarships to study in the School of Law is extremely strong and there are strict requirements. You should check carefully that you are eligible to apply for a particular scholarship before making an application, as most of the schemes are restricted to certain courses and/or nationalities.
You must have an offer of study in place before you can apply for LLM funding. This means that you must make sure that you apply for the LLM as early as possible.
For 2011-2012 the School of Law will be offering a number of full scholarships to applicants for its full-time taught LLM programmes.
- Four Department of Law scholarships available for Home/EU students pursuing the following areas:
- Environmental Law
- European Law
- Public Law
- Public International Law
- Medical Law
- Legal Theory and History
- Human Rights Law
- Competition Law
- Law and Development.
Students who wish to take a general LLM must choose any three modules from the areas mentioned above to qualify for the Department scholarship.
- Two Department of Law scholarships for international, non-European Union, students pursuing the following areas:
- Environmental Law
- European Law
- Public Law
- Public International Law
- Medical Law
- Legal Theory and History
- Human Rights Law
- Competition Law
- Law and Development.

- Three Centre for Commercial Law Studies scholarships available for Home/EU students wishing to take any three commercial law modules under a General LLM or who wish to specialise in the following:
- Commercial and Corporate Law
- Banking and Finance Law
- Tax Law
- Comparative and International Dispute Resolution
- Computer and Communications Law
- Economic Regulation
- Intellectual Property Law
- International Business Law
- Media Law.
- Three Centre for Commercial Law Studies scholarships for international, non-European Union, students wishing to take any three commercial law modules under a General LLM or who wish to specialise in the following:
- Commercial and Corporate Law

- Tax Law

- Computer and Communications Law
- Economic Regulation
- Intellectual Property Law

All the above listed scholarships cover the full cost of tuition only; the scholarships do not cover ancillary course costs (books etc.) or accommodation fees. Scholarships are not payable directly to successful applicants but are set off against the student’s fee invoice.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial need and response to the personal statement question.
Applicants must already have applied for admission to the LLM degree.
What are scholarship winners required to do?
All successful candidates for the full LLM scholarship and the Ugandan, Kazakhstani, Colombian and Sri Lankan partial-scholarship will be required to work two hours a week unpaid, assisting the LLM Office and Law Marketing Team with administrative work and research and assisting at the postgraduate law open evenings.
Applying for the LLM Full Scholarships
Applicants are required to submit the following:
- A completed LLM scholarship application form [PDF 106KB] or [MS Word 1,505KB] and
- A written response to the personal statement.

Personal statement
Students for the scholarships should include a written response to the following question:
'An LLM is an advanced degree designed to allow a student to gain specialized knowledge in a particular area or areas of law. Please tell us why you want to study for an LLM at Queen Mary University and what will you bring to the programme.'
Your statement should be no more than 1000 words in length.
Deadline for Submission for ALL LLM Scholarship applications
The deadline for the 2011 LLM scholarships is Monday 4 April 2011.

Award Process
Applicants will be notified by email on the success of their application by mid-May 2011.
