About the LLM Master of Laws
We offer one year full-time LLM and two year part-time LLM programmes.
For many of our students, LLM study is a stepping stone to developing academic and professional expertise in a particular field of law. For others, it is an opportunity to gain postgraduate knowledge and skills across a broad range of subjects. The programmes of study provide a flexible mix of classroom based teaching (assessed by formal examinations or coursework) in three taught modules, followed by more self-directed work on a 15,000 word dissertation.
Your fellow students will come from the UK and more than 80 other countries, each able to draw on prior academic and in many cases professional experiences from different types of legal system to enrich discussion and debate in class.
One of the distinctive features of the LLM at Queen Mary is the exceptionally wide range of LLM module options. These are advanced programmes of study, so you will be expected to direct your own work and develop high level legal and transferable skills.
Try out the LLM modules before you decide
We run a vital two-week induction period which includes sessions such as: LLM overview, module selection, dissertation and research skills and library inductions. In the second induction week, you can attend sessions in your chosen programme to give you the opportunity to ask the academics questions and to receive more detailed information on modules and the full teaching syllabus. Other sessions, intended to complement your degree, will also be offered during this induction period, so that you can start your degree with the knowledge and supporting framework that you need.
This allows you to get the maximum benefit from the one week "try out period" at the start of the teaching term, when you can attend LLM modules of interest, before deciding which modules you want to formally take as part of your programme.
The full induction programme will be available on this website from August - September each year.
Further details on the academic year can be read on the LLM Year Planner.
