About the Master of Laws programme
We offer one year full-time LLM and two year part-time LLM programmes:
- LLM full-time - Programme Code M2Q1
- LLM part-time - Programme Code M2Q2
For many of our students, LLM study is a stepping stone to developing academic and professional expertise in a particular field of law. For others, it is an opportunity to gain postgraduate knowledge and skills across a broad range of subjects. The programmes of study provide a flexible mix of classroom based teaching (assessed by formal examinations or coursework) in three taught modules, followed by more self-directed work on a 15,000 word dissertation.
Your fellow students will come from the UK and more than 80 other countries, each able to draw on prior academic and in many cases professional experiences from different types of legal system to enrich discussion and debate in class.
One of the distinctive features of the LLM at Queen Mary is the exceptionally wide range of 90 LLM module options. These are advanced programmes of study, so you will be expected to direct your own work and develop high level legal and transferable skills.
Try out the LLM modules before you decide
During the vital induction week, we offer a full programme of events, including an LLM overview session. You will also have the opportunity to attend group sessions in different legal areas (specialisms) to ask questions of academics and to receive more detailed information on modules.
This then allows students to get maximum benefit from the two-week "trying out period" at the start of term, when students can attend any LLM modules of interest, before deciding which modules they wish to formally take as part of their LLM degree and if they wish to do a General or a specialist LLM. Further details can be read on the LLM Year Planner.
