Profile

Dr Leon Vinokur is a Reader in Economics and Finance Education and Director of the MSc Law and Finance programme, an interdisciplinary Master degree between the Centre for Commercial Law Studies and the School of Economics and Finance.

He received his PhD in economics from the University of London and his BA from the Hebrew University. In the past he has worked as a lawyer and a legal adviser at the Legal Advice Department at the Mayor’s Office of Haifa, Israel. He has been a member of the Israeli Bar Association since 2005.

Dr Vinokur is interested in the fields of microeconomics, behavioural economics and environmental economics, regulation and policy analysis. He investigates the impact of mechanisms design, set by the regulator, on the efficiency of markets using intra-daily data. Specifically, he is interested in seeing how policy and market mechanisms impact on the efficiency and transparency.

Research

Leon Vinokur is interested in the fields of microeconomics and environmental economics and policy analysis. He is currently working on applications of behavioural economics in environmental policy analysis.

Amongst his current work, he is investigating the efficiency of Kyoto flexible mechanisms, as they are the driving force behind the success of the Protocol.

In recent work he has investigated the impact of institutional constraints, set by the EU Emission Trading Scheme, on the efficiency of the carbon permits spot market using intra-daily data. Specifically, he is interested in seeing how the banking ban and yearly compliance events, when firms are submitting their carbon permits to cover for their yearly emissions, impact on the efficiency and transparency of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.
