School of Law bursaries

The School of Law awards a number of undergraduate bursaries for academic excellence and contribution to the School. A range of bursaries are available to students, these include: first year bursaries awarded on the basis of a student’s academic achievement before joining the School; and, second and final year bursaries recognising the contribution and success of current students. The bursaries we offer are usually worth £1000 per year.

All undergraduates can apply for a bursary, including students on the BA Law and Politics degree programme and those on the Senior Status LLB. The bursaries are renewed annually subject to good progress by the scholar and at the discretion of our bursaries committee.

Being selected for a bursary has meant that I was able to reduce my hours at work in order to focus on achieving strong grades and contributing to a range of extra-curricular activities.
Rebecca Fay, 2nd year Senior Status LLB

Queen Mary, University of London also offers bursaries to students most in need of financial support. See our fees and finance pages for more information.

How do the bursaries help our students?

School of Law bursaries have been helping our students since 2007. Here's what some of our 2010-2011 bursary winners have to say:

Terese Saplys – 2nd year LLB: "Last summer the bursary paid my living and travel expenses while on work experience with The Guardian's in-house legal team. The experience honed skills that I acquired over the year, but I also got the chance to develop new technical skills such as drafting advice and critically reviewing the in-house client's terms and conditions. This placement was not paid, so the bursary played a critical role in helping me take advantage of the invaluable opportunity."

Lucy Shaddock – 2nd year BA Law and Politics: "The range of books I was able to obtain to enhance my knowledge of each subject simply would not have been realistic without the bursary.  Partly due to my excellent attendance record and partly due to my continual desire to succeed, I was pleased to gain a 2:1 in every section of the course. Becoming a successful bursary recipient had not just positive financial implications but also provided me with the confidence boost I needed at that stage during my first year."

Gianni Sonvico – 3rd year LLB: "The Bursary has helped immensely in a general sense as it has allowed me to concentrate on my studies and extra-curricular activities rather than having to have a part-time job. In addition, it has allowed me to focus more fully, as I have not been overburdened with financial concerns. It also was of huge assistance over the summer as I did not need to seek full-time employment and thus could participate in mini-pupillages and an internship with the Rendition Project."

Stefanija Strumilo - 2nd year LLB: “Being awarded a bursary meant that I could quit my part-time job and focus primarily on the studies by gathering more knowledge about the subject, doing extra research and as a consequence achieving  higher results. The bursary contributed to my day to day living expenses and allowed me to invest more into my studies by updating my resources with additional law textbooks."
