The module is concerned with one of the most important legal relationships to individuals and to society, that between working people and those for whom they work. Topics covered include the common law of the contract of employment; who is (and isn't) protected by statutory employment rights: termination and the statutory right not to be unfairly dismissed; equality and discrimination law at work; and the fundamental human right to freedom of association at work, including since the Human Rights Act 1998. The legal material is studied in its economic, political and social context. This means the module involves analysis both of primary legal sources (ie case law and legislation) and of other kinds of knowledge (like theorizing and empirical investigation).
