LAW6012 Sentencing and Penal Policy

Description

Sentencing and Penal Policy explores the relationship between penal philosophy, principles of sentencing and sentencing practice. Sentencing explores the existing framework, its origin and potential for reform. It looks at custodial and non-custodial sentences and then focuses on young offenders, female offenders and the mentally disordered offender. Victims are also considered. Penal Policy explores what is termed the penal crisis and both expansionism and reductionism are explored. Dangerous offenders and human rights in prison are current topics. Prison privatisation and imprisonment without trial also feature.
